A recent study, to assess the efficacy of a number of emollients, shows Epaderm® Cream out performs two of the leading emollients.  It also shows Epaderm Cream increases hydration and reduces skin roughness after application1.

Epaderm Cream is a 2-in-1 emollient and skin cleanser.  Manufactured from clinically proven ingredients, Epaderm Cream contains less sensitisers and irritants than other leading brands and is suitable for all ages, including babies.  Its light consistency makes Epaderm Cream cosmetically appealing and suitable for daytime application, where the greasy texture of an ointment may reduce compliance.

The volunteer study, involving 22 subjects, was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of three emollients, focusing on their ability to moisturise and hydrate the skin.  The effects the emollients have on skin topography and elasticity was also considered.

The study subjects were assigned to one of four treatment groups.  Three groups used different emollients and one, the control group, was left untreated.  Three days prior to the study starting, the subjects were asked to wash their forearms with mild washing solution and to continue to do so throughout the study period.  All subjects stayed in a climatised room for at least thirty minutes prior to baseline measurements.  The instrumental measurements, for skin capacitance, skin surface profiling and skin elasticity, were repeated approximately 10-16 hours after the preceding product application on each day. Of the 22 subjects who enrolled, 19 completed the study.

The study showed that by applying a suitable emollient, the resultant hydration provides a high diffusional resistance to water on the surface of the skin, which helps reduce the net water loss from the outer layers.  Any substance that forms a continuous, impermeable film through which water cannot escape causes water to be retained in the skin and reduces the incidence of dry skin conditions.
