First time mothers who choose to have a home birth have an increased risk of harm to the baby.

The chance of harm is below 1% yet for future births there is no increased risk. The study looked at 65,000 births in England and found that overall giving birth is very safe regardless of whether you have a home birth, midwife led units or doctors units.

However in a midwife led unit the birth is far more likely to be natural.
