Mölnlycke Health Care, a leading provider of wound care and dermatology solutions to the health sector, has pledged its support to the charity Eczema Outreach (Scotland).

Eczema Outreach (Scotland) was set up earlier this year by the mother of a young child suffering from severe eczema, who couldn’t find any advice or support and felt increasingly isolated.  In the UK alone, one in five children are affected by this distressing and painful skin condition, which can require hours of daily care.  Eczema Outreach offers the only free, practical and emotional help to the families of children with eczema, through a network of peer support and a programme of children’s social outings.

Eczema can affect any part of the skin, but it most commonly affects the bends of the elbows, the back of the knees, around the wrists and neck.  People suffering from atopic eczema have an overactive immune system and their skin easily becomes inflamed.  Their skin ‘barrier’ doesn’t work well, leading to the skin becoming dry and prone to infection.

Eczema causes patches of dry skin to get red, itchy and inflamed.  Over time the skin can thicken, crack and flake.  Eczema is extremely itchy and people may scratch the affected areas until they bleed.  For children, particularly those under five years of age, it is very difficult to stop scratching even when the skin gets painful as well as itchy.

Children with eczema often suffer from low self-esteem and lack confidence due to the impact the skin condition has on their lives.  In a society where how we look is deemed as very important, children with eczema can be excluded and even bullied because of how they look. In order to avoid the triggers of eczema, they may also be denied mainstream activities such as swimming, playing in the sand or cooking with ingredients they may be allergic to.  Eczema Outreach provides sufferers and their families with emotional and practical support when they need it and in the way they want it.

Mölnlycke Health Care is contributing to the charity’s free family welcome pack, which includes a fur-free washable bear, which children can identify with and care for with emollients and bandages.  The pack aims to encourage the families to cope better with the condition, look after their skin using suitable products and dressings and learn about other services that can help them in their daily lives.

Mölnlycke Health Care provides a wide range of products suitable for the treatment of eczema and other skin conditions, including Epaderm® Ointment, Epaderm Cream, Tubifast® Garments and Tubifast Bandages.  The Eczema Outreach welcome pack will include a range of Mölnlycke samples and a variety of information leaflets on eczema and other topics such as support at school and the rights of people with long term conditions.
