March 20th is both International Day of Happiness and the first day of spring!
There is so much to smile about now spring is finally here and studies show that happier people live longer and enjoy better overall health.
So, here are 5 ways you can get happy this spring, inspired by Action for Happiness’ 10 Keys to Happier Living.
Give Nature a Helping Hand
Studies show that helping others makes us happier. The more we help others, the happier we become and the happier we are, the more likely we are to help others; something that is known as a virtuous circle. But it’s not just people you can help! Spring is a time that sees the return of wildlife and our native critters can do with all the help they can get. From making your garden more bee-friendly to helping hedgehogs; there’s plenty you can do to give back to nature this spring.
It’s no secret that our body and our mind are connected. Getting regular exercise and being outdoors is good for both our mental and physical health. With the spring comes the promise of warmer weather and longer days, so it’s the perfect excuse to get active!
Appreciate The World Around You
There is so much to appreciate in spring! Spring breathes life into the previously bare trees and ground and baby animals are born! Taking time to notice and appreciate the world around us, using all our senses, makes us happier.
Set Yourself Some Goals
Having goals to work towards contributes to our happiness. Spring is a time of new beginnings and whatever your goals are, it’s a great time to get motivated to make positive changes in your life.
Do What Makes You Happy
Feeling good in the short term can help us to feel good in the long-term. So do what makes you happy! Obviously, we all need to find a balance; life isn’t about having fun all the time, but you need to make time to do the things you enjoy. This spring, aim to do one thing that makes you happy, however small, every day, or take time to reflect on something that has made you happy each day.
