Nursing is not for everyone. Some people don’t have the compassion or empathy required to consider nursing as a career. Some faint at the site of blood, which is a no-no if you want to work as a nurse. If you do want to be a nurse, there are plenty of career options to choose from. If you already have a nursing qualification, you could study for a Doctorate in Nursing Practice with Bradley University, or you could choose to specialize in a particular area. The specialty you choose will affect your earning potential, so choose wisely.

A Doctor of Nursing Practice degree is the route into a leadership role, but many nurses are more interested in working with patients, the thought of taking on a management role does not appeal. So if a DNP online course is not for you, here are five nursing specialties you should consider looking at in more detail.

Midwife

Midwives work with pregnant women. If you qualify as a midwife, you will be working in tandem with obstetricians and gynecologists, in their clinics or in hospitals. If you have a passion for prenatal care and family services, this is the job for you. Midwives are very much in demand right now and midwifery is one of the highest paying nursing specialties.

Psychiatric Nurse

Mental health is a complex area of nursing, but it can be extremely rewarding if you have an interest in the field. Psychiatric nurses typically work in conjunction with psychiatric physicians. You will probably need a specialist nursing degree to practice in this area, but there are plenty of opportunities for employment once you do qualify.

Nurse Anaesthetist

Certified registered nurse anaesthetists are extremely well paid and there is plenty of job security in this specialist branch of nursing. To become a nurse anaesthetist, you have to take the National Certification Examination for Anaesthesia. Once you are qualified, you will not have any problem finding gainful employment, as there is strong demand for nurse anaesthetists.

Gerontological Nurse Practitioner

Gerontological nursing practitioners work with seniors, either in the patient’s home, or in an assisted living home. The American population is aging, so there will be no shortage of patients. This means a career as a gerontological nurse practitioner is a smart choice.

Pain Management Nurse

Pain management nurses have the opportunity to practice their specialist skills in a number of different places, from the operating room to outpatient clinics in hospitals. Pain management nurses work with patients dealing with chronic conditions. Their skills help vulnerable patients avoid falling into the trap of substance abuse, which can happen when a person is trying to cope with chronic pain.

In general, the most in demand nursing specialties pay the highest salaries, so it is worth investigating different areas of nursing before you make your final decision. If necessary, talk to nurses already practicing in your chosen area to ensure this is the right career pathway for you.
