The Environmental Audit Committee has said that the Government has failed to meet the EU standards on air pollution. Bad air quality costs the UK £8.5-20bn each year and lowers life expectancy for many by years.

The government’s has made a request to the Environmental Audit Commission asking to delay having to meet standards on nitrogen dioxide (NO2) until 2015. By some measures the UK has actually been in breach of EU rules as far back as 2005.

In 2008, around 4,000 people died in London alone from air pollution and 30,000 died across the whole of the UK.

What do you think? Do you live with the misery of asthma or other respiratory illness? Do you think the Government is doing enough?
