Call the Midwife

13 Jan 2012

A series of books written by former AAA patron, Jennifer Worth, have been transformed for the small screen. Call the midwife begins on Sunday 15 January at 8pm on BBC1.

As an eczema, asthma and allergy suffer Jennifer decided to write a book called ‘Eczema and food allergy’ to help explain elimination diets and different treatments. Following this she decided to write a trilogy of books about her time as a midwife.

Call the Midwife tells the story of a group of nuns and midwives working in the East End of London during the 1950s. Jennifer herself was one of the midwives before giving it up to devote more time to music for which she received a fellowship for. The stories are based on her experiences as a midwife during this time.

The show stars Pam Ferris, Jenny Agutter and Miranda Hart. Although Jennifer was involved in the production of the series she tragically never saw it finalised as she passed away in May 2011.
