One of the most widely used treatments for asthma is the use of inhalers (also known as puffers). Inhalers contain a solution of medicine and a propellant which is used to create a fine spray that can be breathed in. Since this goes straight into the airways a much smaller dose of the drug is required than if it were taken in tablet or liquid form. The drug will treat the airways and lungs but little will get into the rest of the body (via the bloodstream) therefore resulting in fewer side-effects.
There are two types of inhaler:
- relievers
- preventers
