According to the news today the UK is a nation of secret boozers. New figures show that around half of us lie about how much we drink.
A team at the University College London ran a study into our drinking habits. It would seem we are only owning up to drinking around 3 billion litres of alcohol which is substantially less than the amounts being purchased each year.
A shocking 8 out of every 10 people may be exceeding the daily recommended levels for safe drinking with half of us being classed as binge-drinkers. And the problem is most common amongst well off women who live in the south of England.
Last year alcohol accounted for almost 9,000 deaths in the UK and problem drinking costs the country up to 22 billion pounds a year.
We’d love to know what you think about this story …. do you think we drink to much?
I live in the United States and I am seeing an epidemic of women from upper-middle-class household drinking heavily both alone and socially. Perhaps a reflection of modern society? Seems to me a method of coping. It doesn’t help that it is depicted in numerous popular television shows as well as movies and books. The Great Society!
