Organised by the British Dental Health Foundation, Mouth Cancer Action Month runs throughout November each year and aims to raise awareness of the disease including common risk factors and symptoms. At Showcase 2013, it’s the ideal time to find out more about the campaign.
Located at stand Q02, the Foundation will be on hand to encourage dental professionals to play a pivotal role in detecting mouth cancer early, a process that can improve survival rates from as low as 50 per cent to over 90 per cent.
Chief Executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, Dr Nigel Carter OBE, highlights the leading role the profession has in the battle against the disease.
Dr Carter says: “If the profession can inform and urge patients that regularly attending check-ups increases the chances of mouth cancer being detected at an early stage, together we can help to raise awareness of this killer disease. This is why getting involved and holding free screening events is so important.
“By using the campaign as an opportunity to screen patients and also to educate about self-examination, it’s also an excellent way to raise the profile of your organisation. More than 7,500 new cases of mouth cancer are diagnosed each year, and supporting the campaign has the potential to save lives.
“Supporting the campaign is simple. You can pop along to our stand at this year’s Dental Showcase and speak to a member of the team. They will be able to register you for a campaign pack, give you information about our Blue Ribbon Appeal and many more ways you can support the campaign.”
The Foundation will also be showcasing its full range of educational products as well as having a representative from theTooth Whitening Information Group (TWIG) on hand to discuss any queries you may have about the group’s work.
