A study by the National Psoriasis Foundation has discovered that as many as 1 in 4 people with psoriasis may also have undiagnosed psoriatic arthritis.
Psoriatic arthritis is a type of inflammatory arthritis that affects the joints and tendons. 30% of people with psoriasis have psoriatic arthritis and it can affect sufferers with mild, moderate or severe cases of the condition.
Of the participants who have been diagnosed with psoriasis only, 22% reported significant symptoms of psoriatic arthritis such as joint pain and swelling. The study also found that the majority of those already diagnosed as suffering with psoriatic arthritis did not receive diagnosis until more than 2 years after first experiencing symptoms.
