Amy Thompson

Senior Cardiac Nurse for British Heart Foundation

Amy studied nursing at the University of York, and has more than nine years’ experience specialising in the care of patients with acute and chronic cardiac problems. She worked as a senior nurse on a coronary care unit for several years and undertook specialist training in critical care nursing, before moving into primary care performing cardiovascular risk assessments, and as a sister in a GP surgery.

Amy moved to the BHF in July 2010, and is senior cardiac nurse in the Prevention and Care team. As part of her varied role, she helps to manage the Heart Information Series (HIS), one of the BHF’s most popular patient publications. Amy is also the medical lead on the Mending Broken Hearts Appeal, a fundraising campaign which aims to fund groundbreaking research that could find a cure for heart failure.

Amy replies to letters and emails from members of the public with medical questions and often answers calls to the charity’s busy Heart Helpline. She also has specific training in supporting families affected by inherited heart conditions, and provides information and advice through the BHF’s Genetic Information Service.
