This amazing ‘Fruit from Heaven’, as it is nicknamed, is a big secret outside Vietnam. However, word is now spreading because of its exceptionally high nutritional content, particularly lycopene and beta carotene. Lycopene and beta carotene contain high levels of antioxidants, which provide the body with its first line of defence. These natural carotenoids also give fruit and vegetables their distinctive colour.
Gac (Latin name is Momordica cochinchinensis) is native to Northern Vietnam but also found across South East Asia. It has been used for hundreds of years for a variety of dishes and as a health supplement. This bright orange fruit grows on vines, like grapes, to about six meters long. When ripe it is about the size of a melon. The harvest season is very short, just three months from November to January. During this time, Vietnamese stock up on the fruit to last them through Tet, the Lunar New Year, and beyond.
The Gac fruit, when ripe, has a very spikey dark orange skin covering a thick rind. Inside the rind are numerous seedpods and it is the oil surrounding these seedpods that contain high levels of important nutrients such as lycopene and beta carotene, with excellent levels of vitamins E and C.
In Asia, Gac is always used in dishes to mark special occasions such as weddings and their Lunar New Year. The distinct bright red/orange colour represents good luck, good health and longevity. In Vietnam, the pulp inside the seedpods is widely used in a dish called xoi gac, more commonly known to us in the West as sticky rice.
Gac Fruit oil nutritional information
It is reported that the Gac fruit oil has the highest concentration of lycopene and beta carotene of any known fruit or vegetable. In turn, the beta carotene converts to vitamin A in the body.
Because it is an oil and not a juice that is extracted from the Gac fruit, these natural powerful antioxidants are absorbed more quickly into the body than other fruits or vegetables.
As well as absorbing lycopene and beta carotene, the oil also helps to absorb other fat-soluble nutrients such as vitamins E and C.
Health Benefits of Gac Fruit oil
The high levels of lycopene and beta carotene help to maintain smooth, healthy and youthful skin. The oil improves the elasticity of the skin and helps to prevent skin damage caused by the sun. In Vietnam, Gac fruit oil is used by ladies as a face mask to improve complexion.
Beta carotene is essential for healthy vision. The high levels of beta carotene present in the Gac fruit oil help to relieve dry and sore eyes, and promote healthy vision. If you ask anyone in Vietnam the primary reason why they use Gac they will say it is for their eyes.
Both lycopene and beta carotene help to boost the immune system and protect it against disease. These antioxidants are the body’s first line of defence, which is great news for those wishing to boost their immune system the natural way.
Hair and Nails
The high levels of lycopene, beta carotene and vitamin E in the Gac fruit have been found to help thinning hair, giving it strength and shine. The same powerful antioxidants also help with nail growth and strength.
There has been a lot in the press recently about the benefits of eating tomatoes because high levels of lycopene are said to help maintain a healthy prostate. Relative to mass, Gac fruit oil is reported to contain up to seventy times more lycopene than tomatoes. All good news for maintaining men’s health.
