Acne during the menopause and ways to help it
Apart from the loss of monthly menstruation, a woman at menopause is likely to experience symptoms associated with changing hormone levels. Hormone fluctuations may lead to gradual changes in the body, such as changes in the skin physiology and accelerated ageing.
There is little documented evidence regarding acne and the menopause. It may be hard for women who do have acne as a symptom as it can feel like a regression back to teenage years, worrying about pimples, whilst also struggling with other symptoms of menopause. Menopausal symptoms differ from woman to woman.
For some, symptoms may arise towards the end of their monthly cycle. For others, it is a difficult process that can last for a few years and cause a variety of changes.
Skin physiology changes may also lead to other conditions such as:
- Oily skin
- Facial hair
- Skin sagging and wrinkling
- Elastosis (lowered rates of skin production and repair)
- Dry skin
- More prone to skin damage
- Hyperpigmentation/age spots
- Hot flushes
Due to fluctuations in hormones it can be challenging to treat the skin, especially when a range of factors are at play. It is advisable to seek professional guidance in treating skin problems in order to improve symptoms.
You may also wish to consider dietary changes, taking exercise and being mindful of getting a good nights’ sleep.
