A story on the BBC News website last week reported that researchers have discovered the chemical that is necessary in order to feel the urge to scratch and itch. This could be good news for people with chronic skin conditions such as eczema, dry skin and psoriasis.
The researchers hope that a more detailed understanding of itching could lead to therapies and treatments for patients struggling to cope with itching.
Prof Malcolm Rustin, from the British Association of Dermatologists, said it was “desperately important” that drugs to combat itch were developed.
“In patients with eczema, the first symptom is itch. There is debate if you have itch, damage the skin barrier and let allergens in, it becomes a vicious circle.”
He went on to say this was an “interesting study” and that developing blockers for the chemical pathway might treat itch.
