You may have seen a video on Facebook over the last few days about people pledging to #TakeaSEQondLook – so far, it’s been viewed by around 11 million people. Or, if you’re on Twitter, you may have noticed people you follow – including talkhealth – taking the pledge. The hashtag is part of a campaign all about encouraging people to rethink the ways in which they judge others. Think about it: how often do you make assumptions about strangers purely on the basis of the way they look – because of their clothes or hair, or the way their skin looks, for example?

By pledging to #TakeaSEQondLook, Twitter users are promising to think again the next time they think about judging someone based purely on their looks. It’s a campaign talkhealth wholeheartedly supports, particularly with our experiences talking to and supporting people with skin conditions and other visible illnesses. We know, through our members, how difficult it can be to live with visible illnesses – and how horrible it can feel to be judged because of them.

With all that in mind, talkhealth was delighted to team up with SEQuaderma, the range of skin care products supporting the campaign, to facilitate a Twitter Chat in which talkhealth members and other Twitter users would have a chance to share their experiences with one another, to pick each other’s brains about how to deal with issues of judgement, and to make their own pledges to #TakeaSEQondLook.

The Twitter Chat ran on Wednesday 18 November between 12 – 1pm, and we were delighted to read the tweets of so many supportive and positive people, including famous advocate for looking beyond other’s appearance, The Scary Guy. If you’re interested, you can read a Storify which contains some of the most useful suggestions and interesting discussions that came up during the Chat – make sure you check it out if, for example, you’ve ever wondered about social media’s role in changing the way we make judgements about people around us. Also make sure you check out the #TakeaSEQondLook hashtag on Twitter, and pledge your support if you haven’t already done so – and follow @SEQuaderma to make sure you don’t miss out on any developments. Check our Twitter Chat page to see our other recent Chats and to keep track of any more upcoming ones. And don’t forget to follow us on Twitter – @talkhealth – to make sure you never miss out!
