Re: Cellulitis
Cellulitis is an infection in the skin. The affected skin (often lower leg) becomes red, hot, swollen and painful. You may also feel unwell with fever, headache, nausea etc. If caught early, tablet antibiotics can cure it but sometimes it will need to be treated in hospital with antibiotics in a dri...

Re: Patchy skin colour
I am sorry but it is not possible to give you a diagnosis based on a photo. In order to make a diagnosis, us dermatologists need to take a thorough history and perform a full examination. A patch of increased pigmentation (hyperpigmentation) can be due to a number of reasons. Please make an appointm...

Re: Teenage Acne
The treatment I would recommend for your son’s acne depends on the severity. If it’s very mild, over the counter skincare may be enough. A non-comedogenic (does not block pores) moisturiser and a daily face wash may be enough. Creams containing benzoyl peroxide applied thinly before bedtime can be h...

Re: Athletes Foot
Fungal nail infections are known as onychomycosis. It is best that nail clippings are taken by your doctor and sent for mycology so that the fungus responsible can be identified. If these are positive for fungal infection, it is usually best that you are treated with oral anti-fungal tablets. Topica...

Re: perimenopause skin itching
Around the time of the menopause it is common to experience changes in the skin. Often the skin can become dry and this alone can lead to itching. Try using a moisturiser that is designed for dry skin/ eczema prone skin. Generally, an ointment at night time (this is more greasy) and a cream or lotio...

Re: Dry skin round mouth
Thanks for your post. You could try to use a moisturiser that has a higher fat content and is designed for eczema. These are called ointments and can be found in the emollient section in any chemist. You do not need a prescription. If the red patches are also itchy then it may be eczema. In this cas...

Re: Lichen sclerosus & dermatitis
Dear Sarah, I am a dermatologist in vulval clinics as well as patch testing clinics and therefore have experience of both. Unfortunately, vulval eczemas is common and it is only sometimes that an allergen is responsible as the cause (contact allergic vulval eczema). More often, patients have a backg...

Re: Skin tags
Skin tags and seborrhoea keratosis (warty harmless bumps that develop with age) are common on the neck and chest area. Although they are totally harmless, many patients find them unsightly and irritating. As they are growths, they cannot be treated with a cream but instead have to be destroyed physi...

Re: I HAVE OPEN SORES ON MY HEAD
Sores on the scalp can be due to a number of diagnosis. In children, often head lice are responsible as scratching can break the skin and introduce a bacterial infection called impetigo. Fungal scalp infection is also very itchy and can result in scratching and sores. There are also other scalp derm...

Re: Unilateral
The skin biopsy may show chronic inflammation but the eczema may still be due to a fungal infection. If a special fungal stain was performed on the skin biopsy then this may identify the problem, if not then a fungal infection can be missed. I think your GP may want to prescribe an anti-fungal cream...
