Re: when is weight loss surgery advisable?

I would agree with Jenny's advice which is very clear and up to date. First step would be to speak to your GP who can assess whether you need some general dietary advice and support. If your case is more complex, then you may need to be referred to a tier 3 service with a view to being considered fo...

Re: Genetic Test

Thank you for your post. There are some very rare genetic disorders which are associated with obesity. Under such circumstances you can be tested for these conditions but it really doesn't sound as if this is the problem here. I'm not aware on any specific lab tests that are widely available to chec...

Re: diabetes and weight loss

Thank you for your post.

Tracey has given some sound advice. The diabetes uk website has a great deal of information on dietary advice and recipes. Your local GP should be able to give some additional information as well.

Best wishes

Re: Anorexia to over eating with other problems

Thank you for your post. Eating disorders and type 1 diabetes is very common and can be difficult to treat without appropriate support and help. As this is such a specialist area your diabetes specialist needs to consider referring you to the local psychology team but they really need to have an exp...

Re: Dieting and Bipolar

Hi Honeybee

The only thing I would add is that if you have bipolar disorder then it would be worth seeking some further advice from your specialist as it's quite possible that the olanzapine treatment may need to be reviewed.

We now know that various gut hormones (incretins) are reduced in patients with...

Re: Hypothyroid and thin

Hi Jo If you have hypothyroidism and are losing weight there could be a number of reasons. Obviously, the most common cause is inadequate calorie intake or excess loss. As hypothyroidism is often an autoimmune condition it can be associated with a number of other autoimmune conditions that can be as...

Re: Hypothyroid & Weight-loss Management

Dear Mamina Many hypothyroid patients do struggle to lose weight. This can be due to a combination of reasons. Quite often patients gain weight prior to being diagnosed and then despite what is perceived to be stable thyroid levels on treatment, have difficulty losing weight. It's imperative to init...

Re: Hypertension and diabetes

Hi Yes, people who are overweight are at increased risk of developing both diabetes and hypertension. This risk is greatest with increasing levels of obesity. Apart from these problems there's also an association with raised blood fats, and low testosterone levels in men. There's also an increased r...

Re: Hypercaecemia and hyperparathyroidism

Hi Jude I'm happy to answer your question as this is my specialist area. There are specific criteria used when determining whether someone should have a parathyroidectomy. It's usually determined by the blood calcium level, combination of renal function and urinary calcium loss, bone loss as determi...
