Re: Does sun block make the sun 100% safe?

No sunscreen is a sunblock and manufacturers are forbidden to use this term - although you often see the word 'sunblock' in magazines. Sunscreens are unable to stop all the incident UV rays from the sun from entering your skin. All they can do is to reduce the number of rays from reaching your vulne...

Re: sun bathing

You are right to avoid active sunbathing, where you lie in direct sunlight with much of your skin exposed. However, there is no need to avoid being outdoors, not least because some sun exposure is necessary for vitamin D production. Being upright rather than lying flat reduces your sun exposure and ...

Re: use of tanning beds to help prevent burning

I'm afraid tan accelerators provide very little in the way of sun protection. Given your past medical history, I would strongly advise that you stick to the usual methods of sun protection - clothing, shade, and sunscreen - and not rely on a base tan.

Re: sun bathing

It's very difficult to give a precise answer as it depends on many factors such as the time of day you start sunbathing, the month and where you are, whether there is any shade nearby or its cloudy, whether you've applied sunscreen, and how sensitive your skin is to sun exposure. The important thing...

Re: sunbeds and sun exposure

I'm afraid it does. The risk of developing skin cancer increases with your cumulative UV exposure - whether from the sun or sunbeds - throughout life. Also we believe that a given UV exposure in early life carries with it a higher risk of skin cancer than the same UV exposure in later life.

Re: sun protection for toddlers/babies scalp

There are a number of manufacturers who make sunscreen specifically for the hair and scalp - try googling "sunscreen for scalp" to find examples. However, many people who use these products complain that they are greasy so I'm afraid you may not find the type of product you are looking for...

Re: use of tanning beds to help prevent burning

When we are in the sun, two things happen to help protect us from skin damage - our skin tans and it also gets thicker. In people with white skin, the skin thickening that occurs is more effective than the tan that develops in protecting us. On many sunbeds, however, the nature of the UV radiation t...

Re: sensitive skin and the sun

A number of the major sunscreen manufacturers will make a sunscreen specifically for sensitive skin. For example, here is a link to the Soltan product made and sold by Boots (http://www.boots.com/en/Soltan-Sensitive-Hypoallergenic-Suncare-Lotion-SPF30-200ml_1207170/). If you are concerned that any c...

Re: Out of date sunscreen

If stored carefully, sunscreen can retain its effectiveness for several years. Providing it is a uniform consistency when you squeeze some out, you can use it with confidence. Sunscreen deteriorates when it is stored somewhere hot, such as on the parcel shelf in the back of a car when the sun is shi...

Re: Vitamin D

It's virtually impossible to give precise information about what constitutes an optimal sun exposure as it depends on so many factors - the weather, the season, our behaviour outdoors and our individual susceptibility to sunburn. My advice is not to worry about our casual sun exposure but take care ...
