Re: Prostate checks

There aren't any until it is advanced, which presents a major problem since it needs to be detected early in order to achieve a cure from treatment. This is why regular testing with PSA is so important.

Re: Tender to touch

The colour of the skin is dependent on blood flow, which is influenced by a number of factors (temperature, anxiety, etc) and the testes are sensitive structures. Most transient symptoms in medicine aren't serious but if you are worried then you need to see your GP.

Sarah

He should ask for an ultrasound scan. If the GP can't arrange this quickly then he should ask for an urgent referral to a urologist under the 2 week rule pathway.

Re: Biopsy

Yes, absolutely. The causes of an elevated PSA are many, but if there is a cancer present then we must pick it up early to have the best chance of cure. The only definitive way to do this is a biopsy. Uncomfortable and inconvenient, certainly but the stakes here are high.

Re: PSA Testing

PSA testing is indeed controversial at present but we have very good evidence that despite PSA not being wholly specific and/or sensitive for prostate cancer, screening with PSA saves lives. The survival advantage at 14 years in the European ERSPC trial was 44% at 14 years compared to men with no sc...

Re: Is age a factor to be considered?

Lynn Good question. Men aged 40 - 70 should know their PSA. I know that this is controversial at present but we have very good evidence that despite PSA not being wholly specific and/or sensitive for prostate cancer screening with PSA saves lives. The survival advantage at 14 years in the European E...

Re: Prostrate check

Checking your prostate yourself isn't going to be possible, however flexible you are! Apart from the contortional aspects, you need someone who is familiar with what a normal prostate feels like to make a digital rectal examination (DRE) worthwhile. You don't have a normal counterpart for comparison...

Re: Bladder Issues

Shane If you have a diagnosis of neurogenic bladder and have a suprapublic catheter (SPC) then some tests must have already been done. However, there are alternatives to a SPC, such as intermittent self-catheterisation and sphincterotomy + a conveen. If you haven't seen a urologist for a while it wo...

Re: Prostate problem?

No, it isn't normal. Do you have any other urinary symptoms? If not, and it doesn't bother you then there's no need to be investigated. On the other hand, if you do and/or it is bothersome then ask your GP to refer you.
