Re: Scrotum retention

thanks for this - you really need to see your GP about this as there are a few possible causes for this. The most likely is that you have developed a hydrocele, which is a harmless collection of fluid around the testicles. But because you mentioned your alcohol issues, it is worth checking that this...

Re: Size reduction for an enlarged prostate

thanks for this question... how can you reduce the size of your prostate? and why would you want to?! Prostate size reduction may be a useful part of treating men with symptoms due to prostate enlargement - eg slow flow, intermittent flow etc. For years we have been able to do this with medication -...

Re: Enlarged postrate

It's a great question - how often should men being treated for urinary symptoms have a review with their GP. The answer of course depends on what we are worried about - for many men this question really means 'should I still be worried about prostate cancer' - the answer to that is that there is goo...

Re: Testicle not 'hanging' correctly

It does not sound like this will be due to any worrying problem with your testicle, and often one does hang higher than the other - but if it feels wrong to you, it is worth asking your GP to examine you, and if necessary, arrange an ultrasound scan to be absolutely sure all is well.

Re: Will the cancer have spread?

I’m sorry to hear of your recent diagnosis - it is difficult to give you any information on your chance of your cancer still being localised within your prostate without more information. But, this is the first thing that the urologists will be finding out now that they have made the diagnosis - the...

Re: What could it be?

Hi most testicular / scrotal lumps are harmless - the commonest lump is an epididymal cyst - these are located at the back of the testicle (or at the top) in the collection of tubes called the epididymis that sit attached to the testicle itself. Your GP may well have been confident that this lump wa...

Re: Self-Checks

Hi I would disagree. No study has ever shown a benefit from testicular self-examination in terms of improving testicular cancer outcomes (http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/cancer-symptoms/how-do-i-check-for-cancer). Testicular cancer is rare, and the vast majority of men I see with scrota...

Re: Mobile phones and testicular cancer

Hi I would agree - there is no evidence of increased risk of testicular cancer or other health problems from carrying a mobile phone in the pocket. As a parent of teenage kids myself, I know we desperately want to find a way to prise their mobiles away from them at times, but unfortunately you are g...

Re: how do you help your partner

Hi a great question, and it is hard to give you an answer without a bit more detail. There are many reasons why men delay going to see their doctor - sometimes it is due to the difficulty of fitting an appointment in around the demands of work - if so, and your partner has problems, see if he can ar...

Re: Prostate checks

it's the only way to directly examine the prostate - believe me, as a doctor, I would really prefer not to have to do this as well! it won't be long though before this method of examination is banished to history - we use a rectal examination to check the size of the prostate when treating symptoms ...
