Re: Athlete's foot

In more persistent/severe cases of athletes foot your gp can prescribe you a course of oral antifungal medication. However it is important to address factors that contribute to recurrent episodes. Recurrent Athletes foot is more frequent in those who wear occlusive footwear, sweat a lot and do not d...

Re: Small dots on hands that turn into bumps

Unfortunately it isn’t possible to accurately diagnose without seeing the rash/spots or you in person. From your description warts remain a possibility but I would advise you initially arrange to see your gp for a review

Re: Recurring shingles

From your description it sounds like you have the persistent nerve pains following a shingles attack (called post herpetic neuralgia) rather than shingles itself per se. Post herpetic neuralgia happens in approx 1/5 people and can last months, sometimes longer. For this type of nerve related pain, l...

Re: Hypertototic excma

Unfortunately methotrexate is a medication that can take a number of weeks (sometimes months) to start working at any one particular dose. I am sure your supervising dermatologist will be guiding your treatment so that if you are clearly not responding to methotrexate despite being on a high dose, o...

Re: Lymphodema

It is very important to maintain the condition of the skin with regular emollients designed for dry flaky skin, such as epaderm, cetraben and diprobase which can all be purchased OTC. For the swelling in just one leg I am assuming your GP has arranged tests to exclude a clot (deep vein thrombosis)? ...

Re: Is there anything else I can do for more relief?

The first suggestion would be to see your gp or dermatologist for a stronger steroid ointment. Eumovate is a strength of steroid that can be purchased OTC and is relatively weak especially for an adult. It would also be important to see your doctor for some routine blood tests, as sometimes there ma...

Re: Holiday acne

As you correctly say this may well be related to other factors such sweating/tight swimwear causing an acne-like rash (or what we call folliculitis) rather than true acne. If this is persistent and sore you may benefit from a short course of antibiotics from your gp or dermatologist. Making sure you...

Re: Perimenopausal

Adult onset acne is common, especially in women but we do not know the exact cause of this. It is most likely to be multifactorial including an underlying genetic risk, lifestyle factors, stress and hormonal fluctuations and many women do notice a significant change in their skin around the time of ...

Re: Going white overnight!

Hello Thank you for your question and sorry to hear about how your hair has been affecting you. The "white over-night" phenomenon is well described in alopecia areata. This is considered an autoimmune condition in which the patient's own immune system attacks the bulb of growing hair follicles. As h...

Re: 8 year old with dandruff

Hello, Thanks for your question. There are some good quality anti-dandruff shampoos over the counter. Look for key ingredients such as ketoconazole, zinc pyrithione and piroctone olamine. If these do not work, your GP can prescribe stronger treatments to help, particularly with any inflammation or i...
