Re: OA in base of thumb

Dear Mary I would recommend asking your GP to refer you to your nearest Hand Therapy Unit. Hands therapists are occupational therapists and physiotherapists who specialise in conditions of the hands and wrists. This is a highly specialised area and they will be best able to advise you on suitable ex...

Re: Exercise and osteoarthritis

I agree with the advice from Matthew Rogers and Dr Holden. Just to add that you're quite right, it can feel like a bit of a catch 22. You might find it helpful to ask your GP for a referral to your local musculoskeletal physiotherapist who can create a specific, targeted exercise programme to help p...

Re: Pain in top of leg

Dear Lacemaker I agree with the comments from both Dr Holden and Matthew Rogers. It would appear to be unlikely that your "buttock" pain is related to your hip joint. Your GP would be able to refer you to a musculoskeletal physiotherapist who can assess you in detail, prescribe suitable ex...

Re: Foot pain

Dear Di Dr Holden's advice is excellent and detailed. I'd just like to add that an experienced musculoskeletal physiotherapist would be able to help with creating a specific exercise programme to deal with your foot mobility (this can also be quite pain-relieving), as well as your lower back pain, m...

Re: Pains in my hips and my lower spine

Hello, I agree with Matthew's comments on exercise. As a general statement, bodies/joints like movement. A joint that doesn't move will become stiff and also painful, so gentle targeted and specific exercises can be very useful for managing and relieving pain especially lower back/hip pain. Your GP ...

Re: Post-traumatic arthritis in shoulder

Hello. I agree with everything that Dr Holden and Matthew have said in their comments. I would just add that a referral to a musculoskeletal physiotherapist could be very helpful for you. Your physiotherapist can help you to ascertain how much of the pain is coming from the shoulder and nerve damage...

Re: Pins and needles in hands and feet

Dear Caroline I like it when patients do some research themselves, I think it shows a motivation to manage their condition and to take responsibility for their management. Having said that, do try not to frighten yourself too much! I would recommend going back to your GP and asking for a referral to...

Re: persistent pain after bunion surgery

Hello, RedMaggie. Dr Holden's suggestions are all excellent. As well as those, you could ask your GP for a referral to an orthopaedic or musculoskeletal physiotherapist, preferably one who has experience of bunion surgery and treating feet. There are a number of self-management techniques which your...

Re: My pain never goes away

Hello, Jude I would like to agree with both Dr Wendy Holden and Codetalk. A multi-modal approach is very important for patients with long-term painful conditions. To add to their comments, a referral to a suitably experienced manual therapist (a physiotherapist or an osteopath) might be helpful for ...

Re: Fibromyalgia

Hello. Patients with fibromyalgia can really benefit from a multi-modal approach including pain relief medicines, education on your condition, exercise, cognitive behavioural approaches, pacing and goal-setting. Pacing is very important for patients suffering with fibromyalgia: it is important to id...
