Re: A moment on the lips...

Hi - I agree with Lisa to definitely go back and talk to your GP. You say you are a "big girl", and losing some of the weight is really important to you - ideally at a nice steady pace and not too quickly. But in the long term this will really help your diabetes and you may find you do not...

Re: Type 1 diabetic

This is so hard isn't it! I worked with kids with type 1 diabetes and it was always particularly hard during the teenage years when young people just wanted to blend into the crowd and not be different at all. Some kids adapt really well while others just seem to fight the whole thing. It just shows...

Re: Diet to lose weight as a Type 1 Diabetic

Hi Type 1 Diabetic - thanks for your question. It sounds as if you have your diabetes under control and essentially it is the weight that you need to tackle. Start off by keeping a food diary, so that you know exactly what you are eating and when. The review that and look at where you can cut down c...

Re: father in law has type 2 diabetes

Hi June - type 2 diabetes is where the body still produces the hormone insulin, but either not enough is being produced or the body is not able to use it properly. The result is that the sugar in the blood is not controlled as tightly as normal and can then go too high. It is these high blood sugars...

Re: weight gain

Hi Rami - thanks for your question. It is really important for your diabetes control to try to be a healthy weight. There are two main areas you can focus on - the first is your diet and the second is exercise and activity. With regard to your food think about what you eat - some people find it help...

Re: medication

Hi Jimham - rashes can occur linked to diabetes or it could be an unrelated condition. There are lots of different rashes and many, many different causes. You say that you have not been on any medication for your diabetes, but you may be able to control it on diet and exercise alone. Do you test you...

Vitamin D

I am a dietitian and I am interested in your thoughts and recommendations with regard to sun exposure and vitamin D. I work with many children and adults, some of whom I get quite concerned about their future bone health for various reasons, for example they have limited calcium intakes due to milk ...

Re: AGE and weight gain

Hi JackieS - thanks for the post. It is true that as we get older our energy (calorie) requirements on average decrease. That means if we do the same thing we can put on a bit of weight. For example the Estimated Average Requirement for energy for a woman aged 19 - 34 years is 2175 calories per day;...

Re: confused about the 'right' intake

Hi f.jane - thanks for the post. Hey - it is really confusing isn't it!! All these experts with all this different advice!! It sounds as if you are making positive progress though so keep it going. Essentially we as individuals are all different, and it is impossible to produce rules that fit us all...
