Re: GET - useful or risky?

I was on the PACE trial at Kings, on CBT. But it didn't really work for me, so per the Trial terms, they offered me Pacing instead, but didn't have the staff, so we talked about GET but I was too scared to try it. They did send me a booklet on Graded Exercise, published by the NHS and written partl...

Re: Harmful Excercise

Sometimes people are concerned by what they have read online, or by someone else affected by their condition: people perhaps saying ‘exercise made me worse’, for example. Then, on the other hand you have the NHS promoting GET, and GET being supported by NICE guidelines and research. Very confusing. ...

Re: National Outcomes Database (NOD)

Hello Cornwall13 A good question, and one that the NHS community is aware of and trying to address. We don't know for sure, but I suspect a few things are at play: I suspect therefore that in some cases, what is being provided by the NHS is different from the PACE trial, and therefore can't be easil...

Re: Flare ups.

Dear Alyx It’s hard to answer your question too specifically, as a full assessment would help to work out what exactly is contributing to your fatigue (everyone’s different), and hence help to work out what can be done to improve your energy levels. However, you are describing what’s ‘known in the t...

Dear goblinff

There is a way forwards with the situation you're in, and I will offer some thoughts tomorrow when I have some more time to focus on what you need.

Re: Old patient harmed by exercise programs

Dear Flopsyrab I was sorry to hear that your physical functioning got worse the more did during your exercise programme. Understandably you would want to know more about what happened. A couple of points worth noting: • A GET programme is a mutually negotiated programme, with you at the centre of th...

Re: Diet

Thanks, Mariane123 for asking for published research for informing our answers! As you know, when looking into these concepts (and all treatments and theories), it’s important to understand the quality of the research published, the background of the study, and the scientific methodology behind it. ...

Re: GET - useful or risky?

Thanks laelowse I agree, the evidence in favour of GET significantly outweighs any anecdotal evidence against. What's important is that the programme is delivered according the NICE guidelines and PACE protocol. I'd suggest looking up BACME: http://www.bacme.info/localservices/ Find your nearest NHS...

Re: Abnormal muscle function in ME?

Dear clare35 There is evidence of weak muscles, deconditioning, reduced heart size, and a reduction in mitochondria (a component of cells associated with energy). However, once scientific studies have taken into account deconditioning and abnormal perception of effort, muscle function is in fact nor...

Re: GET - useful or risky?

Dear laelowse Thank you for your post as it reflects questions and concerns that many people have about Graded Exercise Therapy. Sometimes people are concerned by what they have read online, or by someone else affected by their condition: people perhaps saying ‘exercise made me worse’, for example. ...
