Re: Alternative to estrogen for breast cancer patients
I haven't found oestrogen alone to be helpful for LS. I think you should consider using dermovate to get your symptoms under control combined with regular emollients.

Re: Steroid overuse
Getting your LS under control and then maintaining remission is what we generally aim for. You don't say how much dermovate your using but a general guide is that a 30 gram tube should last 3-6 months. When you first use it to get control then yes, you need to use it daily for one month, alternate d...

Re: Atrophy/Loss of Architecture
You don't say how old you are so some volume loss can be considered quite normal in post-menapausal women. You also don't say if you're using your dermovate regularly enough to help stabilise your LS and encourage good collagen production. Soaks alone will not be particularly helpful. Encouraging bl...

Re: Ongoing treatment regime (including for sores/ulcers)
I'm sorry you've clearly had a lot to contend with! The causes of vulval ulceration are many and taking viral swabs for persistent ulceration lasting several days is very important. You can seek an appointment with your local sexual health clinic to have these swabs taken and more importantly to be ...

Re: Monalisa touch
The Monalisa touch is widely talked about as being a successful treatment for LS. However it hasn't been subjected to enough clinical 'head-to-head' comparison trials with other types of treatment so it is difficult to be sure if it's the right treatment for your type of LS. My own preference is sti...

Re: Do you have to have a biopsy to confirm a diagnosis of LS?
I think it is essential that you are first seen by your GP for a proper examination. Taking a biopsy without a proper history and examination is likely to be less conclusive. Knowing exactly where to take the biopsy is very important. Seeing a dermatologist would enable this to happen if clinically ...

Re: lichenification
Lichenification refers to thickening of a skin lined surface - so yes, lichenification in the vagina can occur. What is causing it however won't be detected with either a swab or urine test. If there is altered skin in the vagina then it needs to be checked out by a gynaecologist initially.

Re: diet/hormones
As LS can occur in patients of all ages eg children, pregnant women and post-menopausal women there is not a simple answer to your question regarding hormones. No research to date has found a clear link to hormone levels to account for the development of LS. Likewise diet hasn't been shown to influe...

Re: Expert clinic on lichen sclerosus
I'm sorry you're having such issues. LS can be unpredictable and continue to spread for a while before it starts to respond to therapy. If you've only been using clobetasol since Feb then atrophy is very unlikely. You are however using a lot of different products on your vulva and there is a potenti...
