Re: Food intolerance link to Chronic Fatigue (ME)?

Food intolerance is a very broad area - lactose intolerance is common (effect 5-15% of the UK population) and has a very clear genetic basis but would only cause symptoms of diarrhoea, bloating, abdominal pain not lethargy or ME. The link between ME and food intolerance is contentious and there is a...

Re: Itchy chapped lips

it's most likely 'lip licking' eczmema. Due to your pollen allergy (hayfever) your nose is blocked so you breath through your mouth. The flow of air over your lips, drys them out and licking them makes it worse. If this makes sense, try to more actively treat the hayfever eg antihistamine sor a nasa...

Re: Inheriting environmental allergies

Hi you can pass on 'atopy' ie an allergic tendency rather than specific allergies. If both parents have allergies , the chance of passing this on is greater. The only thing shown to help is aiming ot exclusively breast feed for 4-6 months. WHat actually happens once you have allergic disease is very...

Re: Metal allergy

hi this sounds like a contact allergy/dermatitiis. The most common cause is nickel which is often added to other metals (making them less pure and thus cheaper). If you can identify the exact cause you will probably be able to find some metals you are fine with. You should ask to see a dermatologist...

Re: Sneezing in the morning

sneezing is typically a symptom of nasal allergy or rhinitis rather than asthma and lots of sneezing in the morning may suggest dist mite allergy as everybody's mattress is full of dust mite. Try simple antihistamines eg cetirizine taken before bedtime or ask your GP to do an allergy test.

Re: Fruit Allergy

HI what you are describing is Oral Allergy Syndrome - it is pretty common and is the result of a crossreaction between the birch pollen you are allergic to and the protein found in the fruit you mention. In short, when you eat these fruit, your immune system things you have taken a mouthful of polle...

Re: Nephrotic syndrome and dairy allergy

Hi – the link between SRNS and milk allergy is not so much a theory as just something that has been noticed in a small number of cases. There is no proposed mechanism for how this may work but it is worth keeping an open mind as I have seen cases when dietary manipulation appears to have helped! Bes...

Re: Eczema and dairy allergy

Hello Catherine Q1. A significant proportion of milk allergic children are soy allergic so a trial of going soy free would be worthwhile. At 12 moths she is unlikely to take a hydrolysed formula but you could try calcium fortified oat milk but this should really be alongside the dietetic advice you w...
