Re: Seafood vs fish allergy

Dear Olga, Many thanks for your post. The proteins in fin-fish and shell-fish are very different and just because your son is allergic to fin-fish it does not mean that he will be allergic to shell-fish. In fact some children can tolerate tuna even though they are allergic to other types of white /o...

Re: Chronic Rhinitis

Dear Mayf, Given the severity of your symptoms I would ask to be referred to an allergy specialist. It is obviously affecting your quality of life. It would be important to determine whether you are allergic to house dust mite. Allergens which are present all year round such as house dust mite are d...

Re: stopping and starting hayfever treatments

Dear Hayfever queen, I think unfortunately the probable reason for your absence of symptoms is the rain fall and poor weather we have been having in April leading to low-moderate tree pollen counts rather than growing out of your allergies. Whether to stop taking you medication depends on how severe...

Re: 7 year old seems to have hay fever

Dear Sally, Children with food allergy often develop allergies to inhalant allergens and may develop allergic rhinitis (hayfever) and asthma. This is called the Allergic March as in an atopic child eczema and food allergy may precede asthma/hay-fever. I would recommend getting testing for inhalant a...

Re: Increased symptoms of Hay fever

Dear Dee, It may be that you were previously only allergic to grass pollen (symptoms usually from May until July/August) and now you have become allergic to tree pollen (symptoms Feb/March to May). You must have other allergies to perennial allergens such as house dust mite or pets (that you own) if...

Re: Hay fever & pine trees - are they connected?

Dear Jody, Allergic conjunctivitis can be part of the spectrum of hay-fever symptoms. Usually in allergic conjunctivis the eyes are runny, itchy and red. The eyes do not usually have pus except for a rare condition called veratokernal conjunctivitis which is usually becasue of tree pollen and classi...

Re: what is the likelihood of it improving?

Dear Sapphire21, Your daughter may have delayed gastrointestinal food allergies which are usually negative on skin prick testing. What has been referred to as 'true allergy' is the immediate allergies which cause hives, swelling and possibly anaphylaxis which are usually positive on skin prick testi...

Re: Possible wheat/gluten reaction in baby 6mths

Sorry the last part of the sentence regarding oats was not completed. There is a small chance of cross-reactivity between oat and wheat so introduce oat cautiously the first time.

Kind regards

Re: Possible wheat/gluten reaction in baby 6mths

Dear Helencos, If this reaction occurred within 30 minutes of eating the wheat and your baby has never tolerated wheat before then it is highly possible that your baby is wheat allergic. I would not give any further wheat, barley or rye products to your child. Maize (corn), rice and oats should be f...

Re: Physcological Allergy?

Dear Marie, My answer really depends on the types of symptoms you had previously with cow's milk and gluten. Immediate allergic symptoms usually occur within the first hour and don't usually last 1-2 days. If it is an immediate allergy you usually get a rash (urticaria/hives), swelling and can get t...
