Re: Should I start HRT?

Thank-you for your question. In women aged over 45, menopause and perimenopause should be diagnosed by symptoms, not by blood tests. So with Mirena which presumably is controlling bleeding, you will not know if your periods have stopped or not, but you can still try HRT. The main part of HRT is estr...

Re: Early Menopause & Bone Density

Your age and how long ago your periods stopped is very important since it still may be worth considering HRT for bone health, and may be more appropriate than the use of bisphosphonates. Having said that, healthy diet and exercise as well as not smoking are hugely important. It is strongly believed ...

Re: Menopause, Fibroids & HRT

There certainly appear to be good reasons to take HRT and you may well find that the joint aches are helped. The history of fibroids should not cause too much concern--fibroids are common, often small and not necessarily stimulated by HRT. Suggest start with a low dose, which would usually be recomm...

Re: Night sweats, insomnia and libido

Just to add to the above, a family history of breast cancer is not necessarily a reason to avoid HRT, which is still the most effective treatment for estrogen deficiency symptoms of the menopause, and there are very few women who cannot take HRT.

Re: skin

Estrogen deficiency of the menopause can have significant effects on skin which can become thin, itchy and can bruise easily. Best to get a blood count checked in case any other cause of bruising but assuming this OK, worth discussing fruther with your doctor and possibly consider the use of HRT, wh...

Re: Evening Primrose Oil

Evening primrose oil can help breast tenderness but is unlikely to help menopausal symptoms. I am not aware of significant side effects. I would be interested to know why you are unable to take HRT--there may well be a genuine reason but there are many myths around HRT and there are very few women w...

Re: Painful sex and bad experiences

How awful for you. Has anyone mentioned vaginismus? This is when the vaginal muscles go into a kind of cramp, causing significant pain. It can happen as a reaction to a painful experience and causes most pain just inside the vagina. There are various techniques which can help. If this has not been c...

Re: Irregular and infrequent periods

The commonest cause of infrequent periods is polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), which is often associated with being overweight, but not always, and can occur in women who are of normal weight. You can have blood tests for this, and it is also worth having thyroid function checked. PCOS does not ne...

Re: swollen, itchy and sore but no discharge.

It would be an unusual reaction but with hormones, anything's possible! Presume thet you are now on your pill-free week. If so, see what happens over the next few days. If it settles down and you decide not to restart the pill, then obviously you will need some other form of contraception.
