Re: prostate

Hi passing urine more frequently can be caused by a number of things: 1. drinking too much! especially caffeinated / carbonated / alcoholic drinks 2. diabetes - can present with frequent urination - if you have a family history, or are overweight, or other symptoms e.g. thirst, weight loss - get a d...

Re: husband is high risk- how to catch it early?

Hi I agree that PSA testing is controversial and you will get all sorts of conflicting advice. But for once I will be quite dogmatic in my advice on PSA: He is at higher risk given this family history and I would personally strongly advise him to have a PSA test. Yes, the ProtecT study made the conc...

Re: self catheterisation

intermittent self-catheterisation probably is the best option here. My only comment would be - whilst it sounds very scary and unpleasant, both men and women rapidly learn how to do self catheterisation and very quickly get used to it, and find it far less of a problem then they expect. New products...

Re: Cranberry and saw palmetto

Hi cranberry - this has been mainly suggested as a treatment to reduce the risk of urinary tract infections (cystitis) - however, the trials that have been done (and there have been lots!) have not shown a convincing benefit, and a large study that combined the results of all the previous research c...

Re: examination

if you have no urinary symptoms of note, there is no particular reason to have your prostate checked by your doctor. There is huge controversy over whether you should have a PSA test ( a blood test to look for risk of prostate cancer) and you will see this discussed in detail in other posts on this ...

Re: Sigmoidoscopy Investigations

speaking as a GP I know how difficult things are at the moment for patients - practices are understaffed and overwhelmed with work, and access to primary care around the country is not what it should be. re sigmoidoscopy - this is a bowel investigation and so a little outside our remit on this forum...

Re: Development of prostate

wow - that is a new question - not something I have ever been asked before! in children and young adults, the prostate is very small. The prostate doesn't tend to cause problems in young men, except sometimes with a condition called prostatitis (although it is not even clear if this is always actual...

Re: 45yr + examinations

Hi it's a good question, and different people will give you different answers. A prostate examination is mainly done for 1 of 2 purposes: 1. if you have urinary symptoms, to check the size of your prostate to help decide how to manage the symptoms. 2. as part of assessing someone's risk of prostate ...

Re: Needing to pee more

Hi Gary so you have developed 'nocturia' - the fancy medical name for passing urine at night! This is a fascinating problem, to sad people like me! It has a number of causes - almost always entirely harmless - but very bothersome at times. If you are frequent day and night - you may have an overacti...
