Bruising on skin

Since I have got older, I have noticed that my skin bruises very easily. The arms and legs appear the most affected. The bruises are quite large and I cannot give a reason why they have bruised, I havent knocked against anything. I am wondering, could this be a sign of anything more serious?

Easy bruising is commonly seen in older skin. Ageing is associated with a number of changes in the structure and function of the skin, including thinning, fragmentation of collagen and elastic fibres and decreased cell healing and DNA repair. There is also a decrease in skin lipids, vascularity and supporting structures. This explains why many people bruise more easily as they age.

However, if you are concerned I would ask your GP to perform some basic blood tests such as full blood count and clotting.

Moisturising your skin twice a day will help to restore the barrier function of your skin and give increased protection from minor bumps and grazes.

I hope that this helps
