Mucus in in poo

I started having jelly/mucus in my poo before Christmas, and have been fortunate, following lots of tests given the all clear for cancer. Which is wonderful news, but no one has explained why the mucus appeared in the first place. Could you please advise me on what causes this mucus. Thank you

Re: Mucus in in poo

Hi,

It is normal for the bowel to make mucus as it helps to keep things functioning normally and protect the gut lining. Passing some mucus from time to time is not all that unusual, and is not usually a cause for concern. It is more commonly reported in conditions like IBS.

Having said that though, a change in someone's bowel habit should be discussed with their GP, just as you did, who may advise further tests, such as a colonoscopy.

I'm glad to hear your test results were all reassuring. The mucus you were seeing is therefore likely to just be the result of normal bowel function.

Best wishes,
