Inconsistent Diarrhea
I have been experiencing diarrhea on and off for the past couple of months. However, it only seems to have happened since I gave birth to my son in December 2017. I can't seem to pinpoint what causes it and make sure all my food is cooked properly. My Dad has suffered from IBS since his 30's I am currnely 25 and was wondering if IBS was hereditary?

Hi emiedo
Yes, we have a small amount of evidence that IBS does run in families, but what we don't have a good deal of evidence of is whether this is related to a genetic marker or whether it is an environment problem. Families do tend to have similar diets and similar lifestyles. It is perhaps relevant that your problem occurred after childbirth and injury during delivery can cause incontinence, and this is maybe something to consider.
Other conditions with similar symptoms to IBS should be considered. I think you should discuss this with a doctor who can test for coeliac disease and other issues such as inflammatory bowel disease plus ruling out 'red-flag' symptoms https://www.theibsnetwork.org/have-i-go ... hing-else/ before a diagnosis is given. For a definite diagnosis of coeliac disease, you need to be eating wheat based products for at least six weeks so that the antibodies are present in your blood. Testing is vital as coeliac disease, and inflammatory bowel disease (Crohns or colitis) are medical conditions that run in families and should be ruled out by your GP.
Kind regards
