Re: Repeated Diarrhoea

Hi,

It sounds like the diarrhoea occurs when you're feeling stressed. Stress is often involved in IBS. This is because the gut and brain are linked via the nervous system and constantly exchange messages. This means that whatever affects your brain also affects your gut. This is why some people have an upset stomach before a stressful event like a job interview or an exam.

You could try taking steps to manage your general stress levels. You can do this by:

Saying 'no' to things you don't want to do, or don't have time for.
Having some 'me' time every day - even if it's just to read a book, or soak in a warm bath.
Taking regular exercise. Outdoor 'green' exercise is especially good for reducing stress levels.
Practice mindfulness by focussing on the present, rather than the past or future.

As it seems to be situations where you have to be somewhere for a specific time that cause you stress, try allowing yourself more time to get to your venue. You could also try some deep breathing before you leave the house, or while you're travelling. Breathe in through your nose to a count of five - allowing your tummy to expand. Hold your breath to a count of 5. Then breathe out to a count of 5, pulling your tummy in. Repeat 5 times whenever you feel anxious or nervous.

I hope this helps.

Re: Repeated Diarrhoea

Hi

While your symptoms are very suggestive of anxiety or stress-related symptoms, which can affect your bowel function, it is imperative to have a medical diagnosis of your problem. I would suggest going to your GP to discuss your symptoms and have a couple of simple blood tests to ensure that your symptoms are in fact related to that. Do not change your diet before you go as one of the tests (a test for coeliac-disease) require you eat bread, pasta and wheat-based breakfast cereals for a definite diagnosis.

It is important to have a positive diagnosis of your problem; if you do in fact have IBS, then you can try other treatments which can be helpful.
