Back surgery

I had spinal fusion L5/S1 procedure anteriorly ten years ago. Can an osteopath help with the constant pain that I am suffering? Thanks

Re: Back surgery

Hi Khakitoots

Most of the time if we hurt ourselves the pain that we experience will resolve within a short period of time, usually less than 6 weeks. Sometimes once you have been living with pain for more than 6 weeks, the nervous system will become a little more sensitive to pain and this is referred to as ‘chronic’ or ‘persistent’ pain. If you still have symptoms after 10 years, you are likely to fit into this category.

In persistent pain conditions, symptoms often don’t respond to standard pain killers as you would expect, and a different approach is required. Relaxation techniques, specific medications and referral to a specialist pain team are all possibilities and your osteopath can help by talking you through these options and referring onward to the most appropriate healthcare colleague.

You can find out more about the management of persistent pain at: http://www.iosteopathy.org/osteopathy-f ... stent-pain
