Help for osteoarthritis

I have had osteoarthritis in my knee following an injury. It seems to have been helped following a recent operation, and also use of high dose feverfew for my migraines (which acts as a painkiller i guess). Am I right in thinking that these things could have helped, especially the operation? I can also recommend glucosamine supplements.

Re: Help for osteoarthritis

Hi Lara

Thanks for your question.

Osteopaths focus mainly on getting the body moving better to support the optimal conditions for healing and repair. Your surgeon is probably best placed to advise on whether the operation might have had an impact on your symptoms and I would suggest asking a medical herbalist about the feverfew.

Osteoarthritis is caused by wear and tear to the joints resulting in damage to the cartilage that cushions them. It’s very common as we get older but it would not normally come on suddenly after an injury. Most injuries will get better on their own as the tissues heal, so it may be that this is simply what’s happened in your case.

Some injuries can leave a joint more vulnerable to wear and tear as we get older. The most important thing is to keep mobile. An osteopath will often be able to help by offering advice, prescribing exercises and providing gentle hands on treatment to address any muscle imbalance or disturbed movement that might contribute to this wear and tear by putting increased loading on the joints or compromising the circulation.

I hope that’s of some help!

Re: Help for osteoarthritis

Hi Lara,

It’s great to hear that your knee symptoms have eased recently. When the pain of arthritis is intense it can be difficult to do the things you want to. Now that things have improved however, it might be worth considering what you can do to maintain the improvement.

ESCAPE-pain is an innovative and evidence based exercise programme designed by Keele University that has been proven to reduce the pain of osteoarthritis of the knee, improve your ability to do daily activities and help to manage some of the psychological impact of arthritis. If you want to find out more you can visit: http://www.escape-pain.org/ or download the free App from the App store.

There is also a lot of helpful advice about how you can manage the condition yourself or with the help of your osteopath at: http://www.iosteopathy.org/osteopathy-f ... arthritis/

Hope this helps.
