Fibromyalgia

Is this sort of treatment any good for Fibro sufferers, when there is no specific pain area?

Re: Fibromyalgia

Hi Mark,

As you will appreciate, the treatment of fibromyalgia is a complicated issue as the symptoms vary considerably from person to person. The exact cause of the condition is still unknown and initial diagnosis is difficult. However, although there is currently no cure for fibromyalgia, there is good evidence to suggest that osteopathic care can help those living with the condition to manage many of the associated symptoms.

Relaxation techniques such as breathing exercises, visualisation and mindfulness have been shown to be helpful in many cases and your osteopath may be able to work through these with you to determine which works best for you. They can also offer advice on pacing your activities, setting daily goals and managing a flare-up in your symptoms which many people find useful. Graded exercise programmes have been shown to have a number of benefits for people living with fibromyalgia including reducing pain, and you might want to see if hands on treatment helps with muscle stiffness if the condition affects you in that way.

Finally, an osteopath will always work within their scope of practice. If these interventions don’t work for you, they may be able to refer on to other healthcare colleagues so that you can try a different approach.
