Lower back pain

Hi there, I have suffered with lower back pain for a number of years and a friend has recommended that I try osteopathy to help, but I'm not really sure what is involved? What do osteopaths do and would it be suitable for me? Can you advise please.

Re: Lower back pain

Hello Scott,
Osteopaths regularly treat lower back pain. All osteopaths are qualified and registered with the General Osteopathic Council. An osteopath will take a detailed case history, asking you about your pain, how long you have had it and what makes it worse. The osteopath will also ask you about any injuries or strains you may have suffered as well as asking about your medical history and general health in quite a lot of detail. Osteopathy is a very "hands -on" profession so the osteopath will go through tests which look at your movements and examine how well your joints and muscles are moving. The examination is not painful because the osteopath needs to work with a relaxed patient as much as possible.

Based on the history and examination, the osteopath will discuss their findings with you and make recommendations about what to do: perhaps offer osteopathic treatment or refer you to another health care professional if appropriate.

Osteopathic treatment is generally not painful. It is common to need several treatments because, usually, the patient has been suffering from the problem for some time, as you have.

You can gain a lot of useful information about local osteopaths by looking at their websites. There is also useful information on the websites of the General Osteopathic Council and the Institute of Osteopathy.

Re: Lower back pain

Hi Scott,

Back pain is a very common condition affecting around 80% of us in the UK at some point in our lives.

Back pain is usually not caused by anything serious and sometimes resolves by itself. Where it persists or makes it difficult for you to do the things you need to, an osteopath can often help.

You can find more information on what to expect from your first appointment on the Institute of Osteopathy's website at: http://www.iosteopathy.org/osteopathy/w ... sultation/

There is also some helpful information on the osteopathic management of back pain at: http://www.iosteopathy.org/what-we-treat/back-pain/
