5 year old soiling and wetting

Please help. Our 5 year old daughter has constant issues with soiling and wetting. We have seen the GP and been referred to a consultant to rule out anything medical and they have confirmed she is not constipated. We even had a course of Movicol and a laxitive 12 months ago to be sure. She is healthy and eats plenty of fruit and fibre and drinks plenty of water and she has a bowel movement every day or every other day but she just will not use the toilet and so will have an accident in her pants. Unless we manage to get her to sit and do a poo at bedtime she will have an accident the next day. She is not scared to use the toilet but just seems reluctant/lazy to leave whatever she is doing to use the loo and ends up having an accident. Many times she has sat in this for a few hours in school without it being noticed and consequently suffers extreme sores and 'nappy rash'. The situation used to be just an issue with bowel movements but it has become worse now in that she is now having daily wet accidents when she never used to. She has never suffered any tragic incidents or stressful traumas that we can look as a trigger and generally she is a bright and happy child from a loving family. We have tried every kind of positive encouragement in the book and have referred to every expert we can think of (including the ERIC helpline, school nurse, health visitors, school teachers, GP, consultants) but nothing seems to help to improve things and the worry is that things seem to be getting worse and that this is starting to affect her mental health. Our next step was going to be to request help from a psychologist to get to the root of her worries/mental block about this but any other help or advice would be so much appreciated! Thank you from a very concerned Mum.

Re: 5 year old soiling and wetting

Charlie
so sorry that you are having such a difficult time with this.
You have done so many of the sensible things already.
It is highly unlikely to be due to any congenital pathology and much more likely to be developmental.
ie she will eventually grow out of it
Im not sure a specialist paediatric urologist will add anything to what you have already covered
Just developing a routine to help as you have done is a key thing. A star/reward chart for sitting on the toilet often helps. Evaluate foods as we recently sorted a similar problem by cutting out chocolate spread!
the psychologist is probably a good idea
