Opposite of anaemia??

I'm pre-diabetic and at my last check my doctor told me I have too many red cells in my blood. She gave it a fancy name and I was too stressed and flustered to take it all in. Is this harmful, and what can I do to help the issue? What causes it? And will it get better on its own?

Dear Charliegreywolf,

Thank you for posting such an interesting question.

There are a few different conditions where there are higher levels of red cells than normal. Was the name the GP gave you polycythaemia? If it was, take a look at this website which should answer some of your questions - http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/polycythae ... ction.aspx

I have to admit, this is a new condition to me and I hope the information on the site is useful to you.
