9 days of spotting/light bleeding before period

I'm slightly concerned about my current bleeding situation. For some background, my last period was June 10th-13th. I then had a lot of sex from June 28th until July 2nd (when my boyfriend came to visit me). I began light bleeding on July 3rd, which continued off and on until July 12th (I thought it was just an abnormal period). However, I woke up this morning and the bleeding was heavier and more like my normal period. Is it possible that the spotting was from the sex and that my period actually just started? Is this a cause of concern?
