Eczema around mouth

I've had eczema (here/there and everywhere on my body) since birth (now in my early 70's). Most of the time I'm on top of things but recently I've had irritation around my mouth. When I was a child eating certain fruits (anything acidic--ie oranges/apples/tomatoes etc) caused this unattractive problem. My lips are very dry too despite using various creams (mainly organic) I own, in an attempt to control the problem. I know I'm allergic to certain preservatives in lotions/potions and food stuffs (and that's just as a starter).
I don't want to use any steroids but would welcome any practical suggestions others may have.
I find the problem disappears if I take an antihistamine tablet..However, they come with their own problems if taken each day.

In hope--thanks.

Thank you for your query. If the eczema is a frequently recurrent problem I would agree steroid creams would not be advisable in the long term. You may however benefit from a non-steroid based anti-inflammatory cream (calcineurin inhibitors) which can be prescribed to you via your dermatologist or GP. Also it may be worth considering repeating allergy (patch) tests if they were done a long time ago as allergies can develop over time and things you didn’t used to be sensitive to can become a problem later on in life.

The first thing which needs sorting out is what is your diagnosis. Your description of the problem raises a number of possible diagnoses including eczema but also perioral dermatitis, urticaria and angio oedema. Also the possibility of an allergic contact sensitivity which might require specialist testing to define. I think it is difficult to suggest any treatment without being more clear about the cause of your problem and I would suggest you go to your GP as a start to see if they could help with this.
