Re: Sunbeds & Vitiligo

Dear Samantha

One of the treatment modalities used for vitiligo is indeed phototherapy. However I would not recommend going to a tanning salon to try and improve the vitiligo.

Phototherapy is provided by expert nurses in a dermatology unit with carefully calibrated machines and appropriate doses depending on your skin type. This is done under the guidance of consultant dermatologist.

The risk of uncontrolled sun exposure to vitiligo is of course burning and thereby increasing the risk of skin cancer. It is worth seeing a dermatologist to see if phototherapy is suitable for you. Other cream based treatments can also be tried which admittedly have quite a variable response rate in patients.

Make sure to high factor sunblock (SPF 50) and UVA block on your skin, in particular on the areas of vitiligo.
