Managing chronic pain

Hi. I have daily migraines that have got worse over time. What are your tips for managing related stress? E.g. Thoughts of 'why me?'; 'how will i cope if it gets worse?'; how can I accept and minimise psychological impact of pain? Thanks.

Re: Managing chronic pain

Hi,

Has anyone ever suggested to you that your migraines are a symptom of stress?

Have you tried any alternative therapy options such as acupuncture or reflexology or aromatherapy as these can also be really helpful with helping to reduce your anxiety and at times when you are in pain or recovering from an attack? Mindfulness and meditation are also very helpful and can be learnt online or taught to you by a counsellor.

The cycle of 'why me' is awful and can be scary. But you are NOT the voices in your head you can control them. You can simply say STOP to yourself when you feel as if you are getting into the cycle and then distract yourself by doing something else. Reframe your thoughts, write them down and go a bit 'detective' on yourself. For example, what is the evidence I cant cope? Ive coped before why will this time be any different, I am a strong person so I will be fine.

There is a lot of evidence that diet has a big influence over a migraine have you had a look at this? It might be worth exploring if you haven't?

Take regular exercise, 20/30 mins a day will make a big difference to your mood and some exercises like yoga and Pilates helps control stress by teaching you to control your breathing.

There are counsellors who specialise in helping people manage stress and your GP may be able to point you in the right direction or you can find someone local to you by looking on https://www.bacp.co.uk/

I hope you find some of this helpful and I wish you all the best.
