Weight Gain

Due to contracting Lyme Disease and becoming ill 5 years ago, I have put on about 6 stone. This is a side effect of medications and also the fact that i live in daily pain and cannot walk very far.
i hate myself and try to stay indoor and not socialise as i think everyone's judging me, ive just been referred to the bariatric weight clinic so am hoping to get some help with weight loss - my question is how do i deal with hating myself so?

Re: Weight Gain

Hi,

I'm so sorry to hear that you have had such a difficult time, I'm really pleased you felt able to reach out on this forum for help it is very brave of you.

As part of the process of bariatric surgery I know from supporting patients when I was a diabetes nurse that you will be offered counselling and I urge you to take it as it will be very helpful to you.

You know the stark fact is that the only person who can change the way you feel about yourself is you. Its sounds like you have been listening to your 'inner bully' who has been telling you that you are not worthy of self-love because of your weight gain. So you need to stop listening to her and change the story! You do not have to listen to the negative voices in your head you can change what they say but it takes practice and can feel very uncomfortable, to begin with.

I bet you are a very kind and supportive person to other people so now you need to remember to be just as kind to yourself. Be kind and compassionate to yourself, do something each day just for you that refills your spirit and makes you feel good. Just taking a bath, watching a favourite film, reading a book or rediscovering a love for a hobby can make all the difference to how you feel about yourself. Try and do this for a least 10 minutes a day.

Every day from now on thank your body for being amazing and getting you through the disease and keeping on keeping you alive. Say this to yourself every night before you go to sleep or when you look in the mirror. 'I am strong' 'I am confident' I am beautiful' this will help change the voices and silence the inner bully. Celebrate your ability to deal with this disease and come through it.

Pain is a very complex thing and doctors are only really beginning to understand how our brains and emotions affect it but there is a lot of evidence that it can be better controlled when you are in a positive frame of mind. There is evidence that mindfulness and meditation help you control pain and can reduce inflammation. There are online courses you can do on both and DVD's you can buy, I've given you a few links below.

I really hope that find some of this useful and helpful and that you begin to recover and like yourself again as you have been so very strong and brave. Good luck.
