Advice that could help incontinence

I'm a 43 year old woman and it's becoming extremely embarrassing how incontinent I am. If I don't get to the toilet immediately I have accidents. I've even woke up wet in the night. I am overweight and trying to loose weight and I have Fibromalgia. Can anyone give me some advice?

Re: Advice that could help incontinence

Firstly you need to have a urine test to ensure there is no infection. It maybe you have what is called "overactive bladder". Normally the bladder fills & the pressure within the bladder doesnt change until it is full & you are in a safe place to pass urine. If the bladder is overactive the pressure rises even if the bladder has a small amount of urine in it & pushes the urine out. The first line treatment is stopping drinking fluids that contain caffiene, such as tea & coffee as this irritates the bladder & acts as a diuretic .Also fizzy drink can irritate the bladder. You need to drink 1 1/2 litres of fluid a day spaced out through out the day as concentrated urine will irritate the bladder as well.. You should perform pelvic floor exercises to tighten the pelvic floor which will stop the leaking. The bladder & bowel foundation have fact sheets on the web site to go through lifestyle changes & techinques.
If you have tried these techinques & the problem persists you should visit your GP who could refer you to a pelvic floor physiotherapist. There are medications called antimuscaranics that stop the bladder pressure from rising when it shouldnt & allow your bladder to hold more urine & go less frequently which may help you.Again I would speak to your GP regarding this.
