Commuting too much

In my job I travel around the UK a lot, perhaps twice a month. I'm only away for two, three or four days at a time but I often leave home on Sunday night so the trips seem to dominate my whole week. With the travelling time plus the working time, I feel that my work/life balance is terrible (although it's fine during the weeks I don't travel with work). Any advice to help me try to have some sense of a life while I'm 'on the road', please?

Re: Commuting too much

Hi,

This sounds really challenging and as you say it means work eats into your weekend as well as the week if you have to be travelling on a Sunday.

There are a few things you can do I think to make the commute 'belong to you' rather than work time. You could enrol on an online course and listen to the lectures in the car or on the train, learn a new language or do a course you have always had an interest in? You could listen to blogs or podcasts that interest you as well or listen to audiobooks some of them are just brilliant. Have some loaded up so you have a choice on the road? I travel a lot as well and have done this and then used the time in the hotel to write for the courses, it makes you feel as if the time is not wasted but enhances your life rather than take something away.

I hope this is helpful and I wish you all the best.
