Prolapse causing bowel problem?

I have a vaginal prolapse and cystocele, gradually getting worse over the last four years, but only just diagnosed. During this time I have also had occasional bowel leakage with no warning - when I run, squat down to lift a grandchild, etc. I have had all sorts of investigations into the bowel problem, and nothing was found to be wrong. Now I am guessing it is caused by the prolapse. I believe a Vaginal Pessary will be an option offered. Would this be likely to fix the bowel problem? Thanks

Re: Prolapse causing bowel problem?

The prolapse suggest you have weakness of your pelvic floor muscles which can lead to escape/leakage of stool. Whilst you may find the pessary helps, it is important to have further plan including strengthening your pelvic floor muscles, ensuring you have a good fluid and fibre intake and even laxatives/other meds if necessary. You mention you have had tests - these can include assessment of the strength of the anal and rectal muscles, as well as your coordination of these muscles (using the right muscles to poo)/how well you evacuate your stool. If you have already seen a gastroenterologist/colorectal surgeon with a specialist interest in pelvic floor disorders they should be able to refer you to a pelvic floor nurse specialist who can help.
