STOMACH AND BOWEL PROBLEMS

I have been suffering with stomach and bowel problems for about 8 years now. I get bad pains in the morning which wakes me up and I get terrible wind and acute stomach pains. I try to go to the toilet but am unable to pass any stools but as soon as I eat I then end up rushing up to the loo and it falls out of me. The stomach pains seem to wear off after I have been up and moving but every time I eat and especially if I have any alcohol I end up with pains and diarrhea. I have had numerous test including Colonoscopy ,Endoscopy Nuclear pills nuclear injection god knows how many scans and they do not seem to be able to find the cause. I started with Benenden then Darenth Valley Hospital then Kings College and Lewisham Hospital under the top specialists in the country. I am now taking numerous tablets Esomeprazole ,Meberine, and Cholestagel which have seemed to have help a bit but If we go out to eat or drink I always have to take 2 immodium for a couple of days or I know I will be running to the loo. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated as it is ruining my day to day life. Many thanks John King

Re: STOMACH AND BOWEL PROBLEMS

Hi Mr King,

The investigations which you have would have been looking for an underlying cause - however when no specific cause is found (and you have had the appropriate investigations to look for an underlying cause) these symptoms are labelled as 'IBS' and you may have what would be termed a diarrhoea-predominant IBS. There are further medications which can be recommended by your specialists and alternatives to this would be dietary modification and even CBT. Of note - you mention a nuclear medicine pill - and starting on sthg called cholestagel - have you been diagnosed with bile acid malabsorption? There are certain reasons why one may develop IBS - including following an gastro-intestinal infection (eg food poisoning) or other illness, a stressful event and other reasons eg a low grade inflammation which is difficult to detect. You may also have an intolerance to a certain food or food group (rather than an allergy) - and avoiding this food group can help your symptoms. It would be worth making sure your specialist is happy that an underlyng cause has been ruled out - then they should be able to discuss other medical options and probably at the same time refer you to a dietician.

Kind Regards,
