IBS

Hello, I am a woman 61 years old and I have been having IBS for a long time. Maybe around 5 years( diagnosed). I am also Diabetic Type 1 ( 35 years)and Celiac (8 or 10 years). It is a lot to control and to manage. I sometimes don’t really know what is what and I just don’t know which way to go. Being Celiac, I have a very strict diet and I try to be careful as much as I can when I go for a meal to a restaurant. At home everything is gluten free and no contamination.

My diabetes has not being with a good control. I can have good days or bad days. Regarding having IBS is quite difficult. Because I am not allowed to eat many carbs or things with gluten, I eat very simple and still get stomach pains, lots of flatulence, feel blotted and sometimes diarrhoea or severe constipation. My GP prescribed buscopan for the pain and omeprazol 40mg daily.

I really don’t know what to do but certainly makes me feel ill and very uncomfortable.

Any suggestions or recommendations? I will appreciate it very very much.

I am a bit desperate.

Thank you.

Regards,

Beatrice

Re: IBS

Hi Beatrice

Can I urge you to ask your GP for a referral to a gastroenterology dietitian and a gastroenterologist to help, If you have not been seen by them already? It is really important that you are following your gluten-free diet well and have recovered properly, as this certainly can cause similar symptoms to IBS. You state that everything is gluten-free at home and you try your best to avoid contamination when eating out, but your doctor should still check to ensure that your symptoms are not being caused by uncontrolled coeliac disease before they give you a diagnosis of IBS. Uncontrolled coeliac disease can affect your diabetic control too, if you are not absorbing nutrition properly, leading to low blood glucose, perhaps. But this could also be affected by diarrhoea from IBS too, if it is severe.

Your situation is quite complicated with regards to diet and I am not really surprised that you are struggling to manage. Your GP can check your coeliac blood test (tissue transglutaminase test) which can see if your coeliac condition is well controlled. Sometimes a camera test that looks at the bowel might have to be repeated to ensure. I am reluctant to give you any dietary advice as I don't have adequate information - you need a review by specialists, in my opinion, and a gastroenterology dietitian can give you specific advice with regards to what to eat and drink in your situation.

Kind regards
